Hello everybody, today we had 3 people from Central Interceptor explaining the new sewage tunnels being built. After watching a video showing how Hiwa-i-te-Rangi the drill worked, we split into 3 groups and did different activities. 1. looking at how rain water is affected by pollution. 2. how gravity will help the tunnel take used water to the plant. 3. The VR goggles and puzzle. I found this
Central Intercepter
The Central Intercepter is a tunnel that takes waste water to the Magere Sewage Plant.
The tunnel is going to be 14.7km and 15m below the ground. It is estimated to last 100 years. It will take 5 years to build and it would also cost 1.2 billion New Zealand Dollars
The drill is 190 metres long and it is named after the Matariki star Hiwa-i-te-rangi. The width of the tunnel is going to be as big as 4 rhinos and the height is 1 giraffe. Our old tunnel couldn’t handle all the waste water. The water waste is bad for our oceans so we are making the Central Interceptor bigger.
